Job description

We’re looking for a Lead Programmer to join and lead the Programming team at an ambitious studio who have recently shipped their debut title, with sales already topping one million units since launch!

As Lead Programmer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of their new IP and be a key figure in the development of the project.

This is a studio that values diversity, open communication, and collaboration. It’s team is a mix of experienced games industry veterans, graduates, and talented individuals from other fields, all learning and growing together. Although small, their ambitions are huge, and their impact is already being felt in the UK industry.

***This role can be worked remotely from within the UK, with the studio asking that you visit the office once a month.***

Your responsibilities…

  • Lead the Programming team on the studio's brand new live game, working alongside the Technical Director.

  • Perform line management duties for part of the Programming team, offering mentorship and training support.

  • Help in assessing training needs and tracking team progress.

  • Collaborate with the Technical Director and Senior team on performance evaluations.

  • Review and create technical designs for new features in the studio’s debut game and future projects.

  • Contribute to the codebase by tackling challenging tasks and guiding the team in best practice.

  • Work cross-functionally with other departments to translate feature ideas into actionable specifications.

  • Champion codebase improvements such as automated testing, unit testing, and performance monitoring.

  • Collaborate with Production to plan for live service updates, hotfixes, and new features.

  • Promote best practices for writing clear, maintainable, and robust code.

  • Foster a positive and collaborative team culture that reflects the studio’s core values.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role…

  • 7 or more years of video game development experience.

  • 3 or more years in a Lead role with a shipped title to your name.

  • Expert-level ability in C++ and ideally Unreal Engine.

  • Experience with player interactions and player movements.

  • Familiarity with version control systems and experience of managing them.

  • Line management experience with a track record of mentoring and team leadership.

  • A solid foundation in computer science with a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.

  • A calm, can-do attitude, with a talent for encouraging and supporting a small team through challenges.

  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

  • Flexibility to visit the South Yorkshire based office once a month.

  • Bonus points if you’ve worked on PC/console games.
