Game Designer

Coatsink – Sunderland, UK

Innovative and up-and-coming indie studio Coatsink are in search of a Game Designer to join their talented team! Coatsink has grown into a diverse and versatile development studio and an indie publisher, becoming part of the Thunderful Group last year.

This studio has created and published fantastic games for current gen consoles, PC, and virtual reality platforms, including the recent games Get Packed, Onward, Cake Bash, Transformers: Battlegrounds, PHOGS! and Jurassic World: Aftermath.

Your day-to-day will include and involve the following:

  • Designing content for the game according to the project’s design
  • Building game content in Unity
  • Maintaining content integrity across the life of the project
  • Communicating with programmers and artists to ensure all aspects of the game content meets the high standards set by the rest of the project

The skills and XP you'll need to succeed:

  • 2+ years experience working in a game design role
  • At least one shipped title whilst working in a game design role
  • Excellent Unity experience
  • Basic programming/scripting knowledge
  • Competent writing ability
  • Basic art skills
  • Strong understanding of level design, UX design, and game design fundamentals
  • Ability to work in both small and large teams
  • Strong passion for playing video games across a wide variety of genres, and analysing what makes them good/bad
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong understanding of the games market and target audience
  • Confident IT skills
  • Innovative problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes and new problems
  • Able to turn constructive criticism into positive or improved results
  • Experience leading a team on a released title
  • Confident working within project management methodology such as SCRUM

  • Designer role on a released unity-based game
  • Experience developing for VR
  • Excellent programming/scripting knowledge
  • Competent writing skills and a passion for storytelling
  • Excellent art skills
  • Relevant university degree
  • Experience using Atlassian software (Jira, Confluence etc)
