Console Programmer

Bulkhead Interactive – Derby, UK

Bulkhead are looking for an experienced Unreal Engine 4 programmer to join their team on an exciting new multiplayer shooter. As a Console Programmer, you will be working on bringing titles to current and next generation consoles. You will be working within a dedicated console team, as well as having direct access to the core team, working collaboratively to build console ready games. 

The team at Bulkhead are a small, tightly knit, group who strive to build impressive multiplayer games. Their programmers tend to be multi-disciplinary developers, who push the boundaries to deliver that goal. Whether that's through code reviews, continuous integration, or agile methodologies.

Your day-to-day will include the following tasks:

  • Bring titles to current and next gen consoles
  • Optimise the game's performance using various profiling tools
  • Implement changes for console-specific experiences
  • Solve problems encountered along the way
  • Write extensible, stable, and efficient code
  • Develop your skills as a programmer
  • Assist others, as required

The skills and XP you'll need to succeed in this role include:
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or other relevant experience
2+ years of industry experience
2+ years of Unreal Engine 4 experience
A history of having shipped a UE4 title on a platform other than PC (ideally Xbox/PS4)
A strong grasp of C++, software design, programming, and debugging
Capable with 3D maths for games
A good understanding of the unique requirements of a competitive first person shooter
A desire to craft multiplayer games
Familiarity of multiplayer game programming
Ability to communicate with a multidisciplinary team
A methodical mind and the ability to think outside the box
Strong work ethic with a willingness to learn and constantly improve

Your application will earn BONUS POINTS for the following:

  • A track record of having developed a specialism: networking, physics, AI, systems, databases, animation, etc
  • Unreal Engine 4 experience in a professional environment
  • Experience programming multiplayer games in Unreal Engine 4
  • Have shipped a commercial multiplayer game
  • Experience writing game code with tight performance constraints
  • Have provably written optimised code in Unreal Engine 4
  • An understanding of game design
