Weekly Games Patch 14/01/20

string(0) ""

Buckle up! There’s actually a decent amount of news to get stuck into before we trudge eagerly into the game releases in this issue of the Weekly Games Patch.

The gaming community knows how to rally around a worthy cause and that hasn’t been more evident than over the last week. Twitch streamers raised a whopping $200,000 for Australian Fire Relief, spear-headed by Loserfruit and Fasffy. On top of this, Ubisoft Australia donated $30,000 towards relief efforts currently being undertaken throughout the country. Awesome Games Done Quick, a series of charity video game marathons featuring speed runners working their way through popular titles, also raised $3.13 million for Prevent Cancer Foundation. Well done to everyone involved!

In next-gen news, Xbox have announced that ‘true’ platform exclusives won’t be coming to the Xbox Series X until roughly a year after launch, with the PS5 rumoured to debut with platform exclusive content. This could be a high-risk strategy for Microsoft, who have played second fiddle to Sony during this current console generation in terms of sales and platform exclusivity.

GAME, popular UK retailer and one of the last big video game establishments on the high street, has announced that it is undergoing a ‘store rationalisation programme’ following its June 2019 takeover by Sports Direct. 40 stores are set to close, due to a mix of poor high street spending over the festive period, an industry wide move to a more digital outlook and unrealistic rent requests from landlords. Rumours suggest some of these stores could be flipped to the BELONG eSports arena arm of the business if cheaper lease agreements can be arranged.

Sony have put the nail in the coffin of rumour by confirming they will not be attending E3 this year. After skipping the convention last year, quoting a lack of things to show, that is certainly not the case now with PS5 on the horizon. Rumours now suggest that Sony will hold their own event just before the Summer, or could potentially roll further announcements into Gamescom later in the year. With the rise of State of Play, which allows a more regular cycle of information rather than an announcement followed by 48 months of radio silence, the use of this new form of marketing can’t be overlooked. Would you be happy to see the PS5 revealed in an upcoming State of Play?

In Aardvark news, we’ve been nominated for Best Recruiter at both the Pocket Gamer Mobile Game Awards and the MCV/DEVELOP 2020 Awards!  Congratulations to all the other nominees across each category and good luck to us all! Just a reminder that we will also be at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) from Monday, 16th March until Friday, 20th March. Both Simon Hope and Ian Goodall will be in attendance, so if you’re going to be there too, be sure to reach out to them. They’d love to meet you!
