Last week the Aardvark Swift team headed out to Cologne for their very first Gamescom. Gamescom is one of the world’s largest gaming events, held annually in Germany, it gives videogame developers the chance to exhibit their upcoming games, and hardware, releases. It also gives game studios around the world a chance to chat to specialist video game recruiters about attracting the best talent to their studios – and that’s where Aardvark Swift comes in!
The guys spent most of their three days at the fantastic ukie pavilion. The ukie team worked tirelessly to make sure everyone’s meetings were running as smoothly and as caffeine and sugar-fueled as possible. Massive thanks to all the time and effort that whole team put in. There were even smoothies in the morning and the whole area looked incredible – and that’s not even mentioning the networking drinks that were held every night.

The rest of the business area was very impressive as well. With stands dedicated to each country showcasing the very best of their studios and service providers. There was also some incredible tech on show, check out Max trying out a full-body immersive VR flight simulator from Birdly.
Ontop of the business area there was of course the incredible main showcase area of the event. With unbelieveable stands from Xbox, Sony, Facebook Games, Google Stadia, Nintendo, Netflix, Wargaming, Frontier, 2k, DeepSilver, THQ Nordic, CD Projekt Red, Square Enix and so, so, so many more.
The Aardvark Swift Team’s favourite parts of Gamescom 2019
Simon Hope – Director & Head of Recruitment
My highlight of the week was being able to get my hands on the Avengers game – Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal have really outdone themselves with this game and I cannot wait for it to be released next year. I was also very impressed with the ukie area, the team put together an incredible pavilion and it was the perfect place to hold all of our meetings, we’ll be highly recommending them for Gamescom 2020.
Chris Mellor – Senior Recruiter
Cyberpunk 2077 was absolutely incredible. I got the opportunity to go into the experience and it’s one that I’ll never forget! I also got the coveted Cyberpunk 2077 jacket to show off. CD Projekt Red have outdone themselves and I cannot wait to get my hands on the game when it comes out next year.
Max Stuart – Senior Recruiter
Getting the opportunity to talk to so many start ups and growing studios was definitely my highlight. There’s some very exciting things happening in the games industry around the world and being able to hear just a tiny snippet of it was really inspiring. Also if you ever visit Cologne definitely order the pork knuckle, it’s the local speciality and pretty incredible!
Jordan Bateman – Specialist Programming Recruiter
My favourite part of Gamescom 2019 had to be trying out the Birdly VR experience, it was so immersive and I really really enjoyed it. I also had a great time meeting so many of our existing and potential new clients face to face, it’s always good to put a face to a name!
Glenn Spenceley – Operations and Performance Manager
I loved the sheer size of the event, unless you see Gamescom for yourself it’s really difficult to appreciate it. It was also great to be a part of the ukie stand, being able to easily set up meetings with other UK studios and service providers. It was great being able to talk to teams from smaller independent studios and playing their games, there is such a array of talent out there! And I also enjoyed getting the chance to experience the esports ESL Championship, it was on another level from anything I’d ever seen before.
Until next year Gamescom. We’ll see you in 2020!
